Many researchers have argued the true definition of a desert. Some define a desert as an arid region, which characteristically receives less than 10 inches of precipitation a year. (http://www.desertusa.com/desert.html) Others define a desert as an area that receives less than 2 inches of rainfall per year, while some believe it is an area that receives 10 to 15 inches or more per year. (McGinnies). Usually a desert is defined by a combination of factors such as climate, topography, and plant and animal communities. (http://www.cdri.org/Desert/index.html)
