Information for graduate students

Research has been an important emphasis in the Department since its inception. Our department is primarily concerned with the application of basic ecological principles to the management and use of natural resources. It has distinguished itself for research on the management of natural ecosystems for livestock production and wildlife conservation. Specific topics of investigation include fisheries management, watershed science, brush and weed control, fire ecology, plant ecophysiology, non-game wildlife ecology, wildlife toxicology, animal reproductive biology, and animal behavior. Graduate students have a unique opportunity to participate in research in many areas of natural resource management. During their training, students are also exposed to the concepts of teamwork and cooperative research. Courses required of graduate students are designed to enhance their ability to conduct research within a specific area of interest and increase professional communication skills. We offer the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy. Nearly 100% of the students we graduate who seek a job in the field find one in less than a year! Of MS holders whose placement we know, about 43% are hired by the government, 30% go into the private sector, 20% go on to doctoral studies, and about 7% become educators. Of PhD holders, about 82% become educators, 14% are in government service, and 4% are hired by the private sector.
