Scaled quail usually stay in coveys of 17 to 23 until March or April. At this time, the males start fighting and pairs begin to form separately (Johnsgard, 1973). Clutch Sizes usually average about 13 to14 eggs. The eggs weigh on average 11.2g and have dimensions on average 3.25 x 2.5 cm (1.28 x 0.98 in). Incubation lasts for twenty-three days and the young weigh almost as much as a full grown adult at 11 to 15 weeks. The males rarely assist in incubation( The North American Breeding Bird Survey,1966-1998). Nests are usually found near water, and the males will assist in defending the brood and nest. The nests are usually in thick vegetation. Studies do show that ovary mass, hen laying and egg production decrease in drought situations(Johnsgard, 1973).
