Sandhill Cranes are found throughout North America and eastern Russia. Migration routes follow the Central Flyway. The Greater, Lesser, and Canadian summer across N. America from Michigan and Ontario to British Columbia and north to Alaska and eastern Siberia. Lesser, Canadian, and some Greater winter in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. The subspecies Florida, Mississippi and Cuban are non-migratory. The Florida is found in Florida with some populations in Mississippi. The Mississippi is found only in Mississippi, while the Cuban is found only in Cuba.

There are six subspecies of Sandhill cranes. The Lesser (G.c.canadensis),Canadian (G. c. rowani), and Greater (G. c. tabida) Sandhill cranes are migratory birds. Non-migratory Sandhill cranes are the Mississippi (G. c. pulla), Cuban (G. c. nesiotes), and Florida (G. c. pratensis). Sub specie are similar in coloration but differ in size.
