Threats & management needs: Rock
rattlesnake habitat is sparse in Texas and the southwest resulting in disjunct populations
vulnerable to stochastic events. However, its occurrence in rugged terrain has possibly
alleviated problems associated with habitat destruction and human caused mortality
(Degenhardt et al 1996: 355). Despite legal protection as a nongame animal in Texas,
illegal collection for the pet trade remains the greatest threat to disjunct, local rock
rattlesnake populations (Degenhardt et al 1996: 355). |
