The river otter is widely distributed throughout the world. Lutra canadensis, the northern river otter, is distributed throughout North America. The otter was found in all major waterways of the United States and Canada until at least the eighteenth century (Tabor and Toweill, 1982). In recent times, the distribution of northern otters has dwindled to mainly Canada, limited northwestern and southeastern portions of the United States (Tabor and Toweill, 1982). Otters are distributed in Texas "from the eastern one-fourth of the state in major watersheds," but "at one time, they could be found in the Panhandle, north central, and southern regions of Texas"
(Texas Parks & Wildlife, http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/lutrcana.htm).
