Range and Distribution

The ring-necked pheasant can be found throughout the United States ranging from the Northeast coast through the Midwest to the West. They are common in 37 counties in the Panhandle of Texas and in seven counties on the coast of Texas (Jefferson 2001-2002). In West Texas their habitats often move within their range from summer to fall-winter due to the harvest of crops (Giudice and Ratti 2001). In West Texas both male and female home ranges average 8.6ha +- 0.7SE for winter, 7.8ha +- 0.6SE for spring, 11.3ha +- 2.1SE for summer, and 13.6ha +- 1.4SE for fall (Giudice and Ratti 2001).
