Description
The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus)
was first introduced into North America in the late 1800s (Diefenbach et al. 2000). It is
now a common game bird, found in the Texas Panhandle and the Texas coastal area (Jefferson
2001-2002). The ring-necked pheasant is a native of Asian countries (Meyer 2000). Male
ring-necked pheasant (Figure 1) are called cocks or roosters and are colorful with a white
ring around their neck. Feathers range from brown to red, blue and yellow. Cocks also have
long and distinct tail feathers. Adult males are 60-70cm long and weigh 0.9-3.0kg (Giudice
and Ratti 2001). Female ring-necked pheasants (Figure 2) are called hens and are
brownishgray. Adult females are 50-60cm long and weigh 0.5-1.1lkg (Giudice and Ratti
2001).
