Reproduction

The breeding season for pronghorn can begin in late July and end in early October, depending on its location. Typically, breeding begins earlier in the more southern part of its range (Gorog 1996). In Texas, the breeding season begins in the last week of August and extends to the first week in October (Davis and Schmidly 1994). Pronghorns are polygamous, and will gather a group of 2 to 14 does. These groups are gathered by the most dominant bucks, and the younger, less dominant bucks usually linger on the outskirts of the harems, attempting to steal a doe while the mature buck is distracted with mating activities. The gestation period lasts between 7 and 7 and a half months (Davis and Schmidly 1994). Does will usually produce two fawns after their first pregnancy, and fawns weigh 2 to 4 kg. At a week, fawns are able to walk and run well and begin nipping on vegetation. Nursing will continue until fawns are about 4 months old, and will be weaned by mating season (Davis and Schmidly 1994).
