Like most wildlife species, the major threat to the Painted Bunting is loss of habitat due to development by humans. Nest parasitism by the Brown-headed and Bronzed Cowbirds is another issue of concern. This is when the Cowbird will invade the nest of the Painted Bunting and remove the bunting eggs and replace them with its own eggs. Due to the beautiful plumage of the Painted Bunting, it was a readily sought after species for the use as a cagebird. Federal laws have helped to curtail this condition some, but it is still sold in the markets of Mexico and the West Indies.
