During spring and fall migration, a variety of open weedy, grassy, and scrub habitats and open woodlands are utilized. Painted Buntings are also found in swampy thickets, hedgerows, woodland edges, and shrubby areas (Muehter, 1998). The winter habitat is a dense cover of high grass, overgrown shrubby pasture, and other "similar low, crowded vegetation" (Lowther, 1999).
