The main foods eaten are seeds, except during spring and early summer. The diet changes upon arrival on breeding grounds in the spring and for most of breeding season. Insects become the main food source for adults and nestlings. The Painted Bunting usually forages on the ground, but during breeding season, feeding habits are diversified. Diurnal feeding is utilized. When collecting seeds from weak-stemmed herbs, they will fly up from ground to grab a stem. The stem is dragged back down. One foot is then placed on the stem and the seeds are ingested (Lowther, 1999).
