The loggerhead Shrike is now officially considered endangered in eastern, and threatened in western, Canada (Cadman 1985). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1977) designated the insular subspecies (L. l. mearnsi) on San Clemente Island endangered. The eastern migratory race (L. l. migrans) was designated as a category 2 candidate for protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 1985, and the entire species was so designated in 1991 (Cade and Woods 1997).
