Food Habits:

Collared peccaries are herbivores, and have a highly
complex digestive system which allows them to digest rough
plants like a ruminant species.  Their favorite foods are prickly
pears, and agaves but they will eat various other items as well.
They include nuts, berries, roots, cultivated crops as well as in
some special cases meat products.  The main reason why javelinas
prefer prickly pears is because of high water content in them which
is good for a lot of the arid places they inhabit.  The reason for living
in arid places is they adaptation to succulents in desert plants which
give them the right amount of water needed.
