The Texas Horned Lizards have developed several means of defense. First the Horned Lizards rely on their camouflage to hide from predators. (Manaster, 1997) Camouflage is usually very close to their environment around them. They also use a "bluff" technique, in which they blow themselves up and use a bobbing motion to scare predators. (Manaster, 1997) Use of their speed to escape is their best defense. The Texas Horned Lizard also uses the technique of squirting blood. They close their eyes, which allows them to fill with blood and then opening their eyes allows for them to spray of a steam of blood. (Manaster, 1997) They blood can be squirted in any direction up to four feet in length.
