The range of the western hognose is quite broad and covers most of the North American grasslands. According to University of Texas Herpetological research the distribution is from Minnesota to southeastern Alberta and south to New Mexico. There are isolated colonies in Manitoba, Minnesota and Iowa. Intergrades between nasicus and gloydi (dusty hognose) occur in Kansas, Oklahoma and northwestern Missouri. Isolated colonies exist in sand prairies of western Illinois and adjacent Iowa. The figure below represents all the counties in Texas where western hognose have been found.
