They have been noted to live in a variety of habitats including sandy shortgrass prairie, rocky arid lands and coastal islands. Hognoses in general require sandy soils for burrowing material during winter. The topography is usually flat or slightly rolling.Warm temperatures prevail through much of the year. Enough seasonal rain to prevent the area from becoming desert but not enough to support a forest biome. Habitat needs are a management concern for this species as well as other grassland speices because of encroaching urbanization.
