In it's natural habitat, the western hognose will consume a variety of amphibians such as leopard frogs (figure 1), tadpoles, tigers salamanders(figure 2)and toads(figure 3). There is also record of all heterodons consuming reptiles such as lizards, lizard eggs, snakes, snake eggs and turtle eggs. It has been noted that in captivity they will eat a diet of rodent as well. The snake has diurnal and crepuscular feeding habits, foraging only in early morning or late evening. They are slightly venomous to only their small prey.
