The sequences coyotes use for predation are divided into six components: search, orientation, stalk, pounce, head thrust search into ground cover, and rush (Beckoff and Wells,1980). Coyotes depend on various senses to locate prey. They are vision, audition, and olfaction (Beckoff and Wells, 1980). The priorities of these senses vary with the conditions of the environment (Beckoff and Wells, 1980). There are many studies going on right now about the predatory habits of coyotes on domestic livestock. In 16 studies, coyotes were responsible for 82 percent of sheep losses from predation (Sterner and Schumake, 1978). But, at the same time, very few flocks of sheep showed sizeable losses (Sterner and Schumake, 1978). Also, coyote predation is not the chief cause of losses in most cases (Sterner and Schumake, 1978).
