The size of a coyotes home range varies geographically and seasonally and there is quite a bit of individual variability within different populations as well (Beckoff and Wells, 1980). The size of thehome range is determined by social organization (Beckoff and Wells, 1980). The coyotes that live in packs defending ungulate carrion during the winter have much smaller home ranges than those living in pairs or alone. It is usually just the pack coyotes that defend territory, not the ones living alone or in pairs (Beckoff and Wells, 1980).
