Lagomorphs are cosmopolitan
in distribution. The cottontail occupies most of the US and parts of Canada with various
subspecies. Because of the numerous subspecies, the cottontail has the widest distribution
of any other member in their genus. They occur in distinct geographical populations
(Chapman, 1977 pg19), illustrated by the differences between the subspecies. They
are particularly abundant in North American because they are early to mid successional
species. In North America, they thrive in almost any environment that is kept from
reaching climax (Bolen, 1995 pg42).
They have been very tolerant of civilization (Burger, 1973 pg48) and thrive
in urban areas due to diversified shubbery that produce a steady supply of food throughout
the year (Bolen, 1995 pg357). They are also found abundant in playa lake basin areas
(Scribner, 1982 pg2). |
