Predation Copperheads are hunted by other snakes, hawks, owls, roadrunners, opossums, skunks, and weasels (Ditmars and Litt 1948). The coloring pattern of the snakes offers a great camouflage. They are also immune to the venom of cottonmouths through blood serum factors because the venom of the cottonmouths is closely related to the venom of the copperheads (Milton, Jr and Minton 1969). Many copperheads are also killed by humans who fear the poisonous snakes even though they are relatively shy creatures.

Loss of Habitat As woodlands are cut down for clearing and are lost to fires, copperheads loose more of their breeding and hunting habitats (Reinert 1984).
