Copperheads are shy and unthreatening unless provoked by another animal or human (Milton, Jr and Minton 1969). They are capable of climbing and swimming but are usually found on low, dry ground. Copperheads will stay in one spot for many days waiting for or digesting a meal. The snakes are active during the day in the spring and fall and become active at night when the temperatures rise in the summer (Keown 1997-2000).
