Mating occurs when the female is receptive in February and March, but the female is capable of breeding into July (Blum, 1996). The size of the litter can range from one to four kittens. The female appears to breed between the first and second years of their life (Chapman and Feldhamer, 1982). The kittens will spend almost a year with their mother learning to survive and be a bobcat. Kittens that survive the harsh first year will spend the second year trying to find their own home range so that they can breed and continue the cycle (Blum, 1996).
