Mortality
The highest causes of mortality are starvation and shooting. In some temperate regions when main prey species is scarce or absent, many starve rather than switch to alternatives. This also occurs during boom/bust mouse and rat population cycles. High numbers of young produced during the boom starve during the bust cycle. Cannibalizing of chicks is rare but, has been recorded; sibling induced mortality has also been recorded.
