Behavior
Red wolves are mainly nocturnal and
hunt and live within a pack Vocalization of red wolves is intermediate
between a coyote and gray wolf. (animaldiversity) The packs consist of a
mating pair and their pups. Both male and female red wolves' care for the
pups. Maturity in red wolves occurs in the second or third year of life.
Breeding season
of the mated pair is from January to March and the gestation period is 60-63
days. Average litter size is 3-6 pups. The pups are born with their eyes
closed and depend on their parents for two months. Dens of the red wolf are
located in trunk of hollow trees, sandy knolls, or stream banks. The pups
stay with their initial packs until they reach breeding age and then they
form small family groups. (species.tws.gov/bio-rwol)
