Management Implications
During release
plans biological factors should be examined. These factors are prey
availability within the area of release. Many areas have been invaded by
human development so there should be a cooperative agreement between
surrounding landowners and the federal lands. Many of the failed releases
were due to the wolves leaving federal land. Social structure is a must
among released wolves and to insure this structure family units should be
released together. Red wolves that are in the relocation program should have
been exposed to wild environments and been born in the wild (van Manen et.
al. Journal of Wildlife Management 64(4): 200).
