Range
and Distribution:
Today, pronghorns have a
scattered but widespread range throughout the western part of North
America as shown in diagram A (Kitchen and O’Gara 1982). Important
aspects of pronghorn habitat are a low, rolling topography and a mixture
of forbs, grasses and shrubs (Pisarowicz 2002). The pronghorn populations
are found to be the densest in areas where the annual precipitation is
between 25-35 cm (Autenrieth 1978). The majority of antelope live in
midgrass to shortgrass range. They also occur in mixed grass-shrub and
grass-sage range and a tiny percent are in deserts. In the early 1800’s,
the pronghorn’s population was estimated at 35 million in North America.
By 1900 there were only about 13,000 left (Hopkins 1999).
