Habitat:

Pronghorn prefer open, expansive terrain. They use a combination of their powerful eyesight and their rapid speed to escape to cover which consists of rolling topography, shrubs, canyons, breaks and even forests depending on the location (Autenrieth 1978). Pronghorn prefer areas of open vegetation for reproduction (Autenrieth 1978). Pronghorn’s food consists of grasses, forbs, shrubs and other regional forage. Forbs are the most critical food and are consumed at all times except for fall. Grasses are only important in the spring (Kitchen and O’Gara 1982). Often agricultural crops are important for winter nutrition. When the moisture content is 75% or more of forbs and, they are abundant, antelope will not have to drink surface water (Kitchen and O’Gara 1982). However, in dryer climates the pronghorn drink surface water and must keep its range within 5-6 km. from the water (Kitchen and O’Gara 1982). Some desert antelope get their water from succulents.
