The pintail is a upland nester. The highest concentrations occur in open habitat where vegetation is low and sparse. The nest site is almost always within .5 miles of a water source.

The female leads the young to the water source after they hatch. The pintails average clutch size is 8 eggs, ranging from 3 to 14(2). Incubation of eggs lasts 22 to 23 days(2). The female stays with the young until the young are able to fly.
