Reproduction:
Northern harriers usually mate
with a different partner each breeding season (Simmons 2000). During the
breeding season a male will try to attract a potential mate by sky
dancing. The male swoops down from 60-100 feet down to about 10 feet, then
climbs back up and repeats the maneuver. This continuous swooping and
climbing can best be described as a long series of capital U’s on a
piece of paper (Barnard 1987). There is essentially no pair fidelity among
Northern Harriers, an average of 75% are monogamous, while the other 25%
are polygamous during the breeding season (Simmons 2000). |
