Predators:
Harriers are most at risk from
predation during the egg and nestling stages. Coyotes (Canis latrans),
feral dogs (Canis familiaris), Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), Racoon (Procyon
lotor), Red Fox (Vulpes fulva), Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) raid
the nests of Northern Harriers as part of their diet. Livestock and White
– tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) trample the eggs and nestlings
while foraging (Macwhirter 1996). |
