The northern harrier breeds from Alaska to the east coast of the Canadian provinces, and south to southern California, Arizona, Kansas, and Virginia. The wintering range for the northern harrier extends from British Columbia, Canada and the great lakes region south to South America (AOU 1982). Northern Harriers breed from Alaska, throughout Canada, and through the lower 48 states. They winter in Central America, occasionally reaching northern South America, and some West Indies islands (Heintzelman 1979).
