Diet:

The northern harriers prefer small mammals and small birds such as: Sagebrush Voles (Lemmiscus curtatus), Western Harvest Mice (Reithrodontomys megalotis), Spotted Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus spilosoma), Eastern Meadowlarks (Sturnella magna), House Sparrows (Passer domesticus), and Red- winged Black birds (Agelaius phoeniceus). They will hunt frogs, snakes and insects when the preferred prey is not as available (Dekker 1996).
