Habitat

The Texas indigo snake lives in Mexico and southern Texas in the mesquite brush country near streams, ponds and windmill seeps (Werler and Dixon 2000).  They may be found in the mesquite savannah, thorn brush woodlands, grassy plains, and costal sandhills (Cannatella 2000).  The snake utilizes underground burrows with high humidity for molting and for permanent dens (Benson 2002).  Brush piles are also utilized by the indigo snake (Snyder 1993).  The snake needs a large area because of its home range size which may be up to 229 hectares in the summer (Snyder 1993).
