The gray fox is omnivorous and diet often varies with season and availability (Davis and Schmidly 1997).  They are primarily nocturnal.  The main source of food is small mammals such as rabbits, mice, and moles.  Grasshoppers and crickets are an important source of food during late summer and autumn (Whitaker 1996).  Gray fox have been known to prey on small sheep and goats in some areas.
