Control and Management

Most control practices are focused on gray fox extermination.  Over the last ten years, the strategy has been varmint hunts where value is placed on certain animals.  The gray fox is one of the most important fur bearing animals in the state of Texas (Davis and Schmidly 1997).  There are trappers who will come out and trap them if they are a problem.  Some people put out poison, snares, and cyanide guns to solve the problem.  There has not been a real concern for management of the gray fox.  As long as there is suitable habitat they seem to do very well, even taking the place of red foxes when an area becomes unsuitable for them (Fritzell and Haroldson 1982).
