Most gray fox prefer brush covered bluffs where woodland and farmland were well interspersed (Fritzell and Haroldson 1982).  Several studies have suggested that gray foxes use old fields more than agricultural and brushy habitats (Bowles 1975).  Throughout the year, they used woodlands more during the day than at night.  The average home range for males was 115 ha and 107 ha for females (Bowles 1975).  Home range increases for both sexes in the late fall and winter.  During the whelping season, home range decreases for females and increases for males (Fritzell and Haroldson 1982).
