Bald Eagles are very opportunistic feeders ; their diet is made up primarily of fish. The fish they eat do not always have to be alive. They will catch fish, but if available they will eat fish that have died. Fish that  have died due to winter die off are a very valuable food source that is readily accessible.   Another important  and available food source for the bald eagle is waterfowl.  During times of very sever winter weather, the eagles move more upland and hunt for small mammals and birds (Gerrard 1988).
