The
alligator snapping turtle is considered threatened in Texas and over much
of its native range (Texas Parks and Wildlife). It is being considered
for listing as endangered under federal law, but due to the solitary,
sedentary and secretive lifestyle of the alligator snapper, no conclusive
population estimates can be made (Pritchard 1989).
