Economic Value

The alligator snapping turtle has been exploited for meat through commercial harvest (Richards 2002, Roman and Bowen 2001).  Although commercial trapping was closed in the southeastern United States in the 1980’s, alligator snapping turtle was genetically identified in meat samples in Louisiana in 2001 (Roman and Bowen 2001).
