Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica

Corcovado National Park is located on the Osa Peninsula in southwestern Costa Rica. It is over 50,000 hectares in size, and is not directly accessible by road. It ranges in elevation from sea level to nearly 800 meters, and contains a range of well-protected ecosystems including tidal flats, lowland tropical rainforest, swamp, and even cloud forest. The area enjoys 4-6 m of rainfall annually.

The park contains a variety of wildlife, including many mammals (six species of wild cats, four species of monkey, tapirs and peccaries and tamanduas, to name some), birds (macaws are quite common), reptiles (including sea turtles, two crocodilians, and a variety of snakes and lizards) and amphibians (including poison arrow frogs, among many others). A site maintained by Dr. Larry Gilbert provides species lists for many groups.
