Advice for potential graduate students

Mentoring graduate students is an important part of the duties of an academic, and is one of the most enjoyable ones for me.

By the time they are ready to defend their dissertation, I expect that graduate students might know more about their chosen research topic than I do. I would therefore be comfortable accepting students wishing to work on a system different from mine, so long as their interests lie within the broad range of questions in which I am interested. I would also be comfortable co-advising graduate students who may have only partially overlapping interests. However, I expect all my graduate students, especially at the doctoral level, to be self-motivated, independent thinkers and workers.
