Evaluation of Aerial survey Techniques for lesser prairie chickens

The advantages gained from implementing large-scale population monitoring such as aerial surveys include increased insight into the dynamics of populations, improved evaluations of management activities and their effectiveness, and increased early-warning of deleterious population change.  Therefore, we have initiated research designed to evaluate various aerial survey techniques for monitoring lesser prairie chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) populations which have significantly declined from historic levels.  We are currently evaluating 3 survey platforms: Cessna 172, R22 helicopter, and R44 helicopter.  Specifically, our objectives are to 1) determine the best technique to locate new leks, 2) determine the best technique to estimate the number of leks, and 3) determine the best technique to estimate number of lesser prairie chickens.
